Art and Octopuses

I don’t know why on the 3rd March 2023 around two to three in the morning I became transfixed with writing poetry and flash fiction based on octopuses, but I do know one thing…

I am really good at painting octopuses!

I don’t really know why I wanted to share this; I am writing this after writing the flash fiction story called “A boy’s unconscious battle”.

I feel like painting the scene in my mind right now, but we all know why that can’t happen right now.  No available art table and I am not too keen to go downstairs within ten feet of a rat to paint at near four in the morning when its freezing cold downstairs and Ray (my house rabbit) will have a temper tantrum throughout the whole painting session because I am disturbing him at an unholy hour and please turn out the light you selfish human!

Rightly so too!

If I could have painted I know what the scene would look like.

My son Henry twisted in his blankets like how I saw him tonight, surrounded by his sea of teddy bears fallen around him in what looked like their attempt to try and free him from the onslaught of sheet tentacles around his hips and arms, Henry’s legs and arms all over the place too – he didn’t look very comfortable.  A pillow on the floor and chewing in his sleep – he was talking about different flavours of gum moments before he slept.

It would have been fun to have painted it, at least six hours as it would be a complicated piece for me, a mix of ink and watercolours.

Thanks for reading…

Sea of teddy bears

Drowning in a sea of teddy bears

Arms and legs akimbo everywhere

Snuffling and snorkelling in the sea of fluff

Fast asleep in mounds of stuff

A lumpy duvet collected by your head

As pillows have fallen from your bed

You slumber into a world of dreams

Where nothing is quite as it seems

Never knowing who lurks by the door

Watching you and listening to your sleepy snore

Sighing as they know so well

That soon adulthood will cast its spell

And you won’t be like that in a year or three

Because that is how it’s meant to be

You’ll grow up and leave this place

To go off into the world your dreams to chase

And you will be the one by the door

Watching your children as they snore

And seeing them go and chase their dreams

Because this is the way of life it seems

Sea of sorrow

My tears fill the salty sea

Do you swim and play in my sea of sorrow?

What about tomorrow?

Does my heart mean anything to you?

Or do you take pleasure from my pain?

Do you think that I am vain, for loving you?

Because I’ve died

Is it enough to show the world at all?

That I’ve ascended but now I fall?

Into a chasm of pain

Being driven insane

Will I feel the same… again?

I might as well give up

Stop fighting

Because nothing is righting the way I need it go

Why can’t thing be just so?

Or is it me who won’t let go?

Oh no

I’ve tied, through the needles that bite

I’ve tried through the ashes that burned

I’ve tried through the icy waters

I’ve tried to turn

But things swing round back at me

Fighting me into tragedy

I have struggled with reality until I am through

I am done, I am tired and life’s won

This battle

What can I do?

But fight again, until the end

Until life has gone from me

Into the icy sea

And I have drowned in the pain

And I went insane

And I took my life

With a bloodied knife

And I’m not the same

Fighting spirit I was

I have given up… because…

I’ve died

Matrix Key

I melt into you like mushy ice-cream on a hot summer’s day

My cold heart is thawing, now is it time to play?

I dream of a life that is better than my past

I will sail to my future it’s an adventure and fast!

I hope you won’t be shy when you come and find me

I hope you will understand my excitement and be free?

To be yourself whoever you may be

And together we will run into the sunset and let’s see

If all we knew is true and real

Have we left the matrix?

I think we’ve found the key

But together we are running towards the free formed sea

Are we going to drown in the waves?

You better not ask!

Because in happiness we are meant to bask!

Hand in hand we go together

To weather the storm and breathe the aether

We are one you and I

Together we will be free and fly!

Mermaids murder murmur

They told me to drown my sorrows

So I drowned you

I held your head under water

Until your life was through

I supped and dined on your heart

Killing you was a fine art

I am part fish and human too

I took immense joy ending you

You was my bane

You was my terror

Bothering me was your error

I pulled you into deep dark waters

I won’t be a pet for your daughters

A mermaid lives her life free in the sea

Your biggest mistake

Was hunting me

Phantoms of the sea

We hear echoes in the dark like night

But it is daylight outside right now

We are in a mouldy damp place

Shadowed with stones around

Every footstep is like a heartbeat

Every movement a rustle like many leaves

Everything is black and wet

This is a home for us thieves

We are scurvy vagabonds

Fresh from the sea

This is our hiding place

It’s not nice, but it keeps us free

We do not wander in the daylight hours

We sit and wait till dark

Then once everyone is tucked in bed

A commandeered new ship we’ll embark

We keep this way forever

We are the pirate ghosts

Though some say we look fresh and alive

If I said I had flesh I’d boast

We’re not like what we used to be

What we are I really don’t know

But we don’t have mortal concerns and we have far to go

So maybe we will see you on the shores of some sea town

But it is likely if we see you, you will surely drown

What we are, I cannot tell

But we won’t be looked on at all

If you see us, by perchance

We will take you to Poseidon’s ball

Some may even call it Hell

Prompt result 1

Today’s prompts were Mermaid – lightning – apple, blue and bird.

For me the searches I had found prompted these following ideas.

  1. An electric eel mermaid from the deepest depths of the ocean is trying to prove to the other mermaids who live up higher than she does that because she comes from the darkest depths that she is not evil and dark by nature. Unfortunately she loses her temper trying to make the others see a different side to her that she accidentally electrocutes a prominent figure in the other mermaids’ society and she swims away, higher and higher until she gets to the surface of the ocean, where she befriends a blue sea bird.
  2. A woman is trying to organise a mermaid theme birthday party for her daughter’s eighth birthday. Many trials and plenty of errors meant that it was a struggle for her to find mermaid theme food for her daughter, but she stumbles across a recipe for blue chocolate apples in edible glitter stuffed into an ice-cream cone and that saves the day!
  3. A bird has magical powers of throwing out lightning from his beak befriends a beached and sick mermaid and he brings her apples to eat from the island she is beached on.

Now all of them are very good ideas for stories, whether they are flash fictions, short stories or full novels who knows what will happen with those story-lines?  I am not claiming these story-lines, I am merely demonstrating how easy it is to play with ideas with a few keyword prompts and how you can train your brain to do this in everything you experience day to day.

Inktober 2018 – Day 27 – Blue Whale

Inktober Day 27 – Blue Whale

I know it’s terrible but I had trouble focusing my hands today, sometimes my hands get shaky days and this was one of them, first time in nearly 3 months!  I wasn’t going to let inktober slip by with a skipped day, not this year!  Also, I never drew a whale before, I think…

Inktober Day 12 – The Kappa

The Kappa – Yokai of Japan

Today’s Inktober is based on a Japanese demon known as The Kappa part of the Yokai demons, he lives in embodiments of water, rivers, lakes and ponds.

Kappas are renowned for their obsession and passion for cucumbers and therefore locals often give offerings of cucumbers at festivals to the kappa’s to keep them from becoming harmful to the villagers.

Kappas have a naturally forming dip at the top of their heads which constantly hold water, if the water was to be accidentally spilled out, the kappa can become extremely weak or die.  It is said, if you are by an embodiment of water and you see a large aquatic humanoid which represents a human, frog and tortoise mixed together, sometimes they may seem like half duck and turtle that is a kappa and that if you do not have a cucumber to hand, this creature will either rape you anally and steal a part of your soul or tear your limbs apart as their second favourite form of food; So what do you do to ensure you are safe from this creature if you can’t give it an offering – you bow, these creatures are awfully polite and will bow back at you, spilling the water from their heads and rendering them helpless until they can top the water back up in its head giving you enough time to scarper!  Despite how evil all of this sounds, it is also thought that Kappas aren’t always malevolent, in fact often times they can be benevolent and help people who go fishing, particularly if they have been appeased with a cucumber or two.

In old Tokyo many people believed that if you ate cucumbers before going fishing you could prevent an attack, but then this act was banned by law because it was seen to be provoking the kappas to attack all the more!
